Game Overview
Fracture Fight is a short 3rd-person RTS game made in UEFN for a game jam. Two players face off across a wall, collecting resources to send zombies to each other’s side. The wall blocks players but allows throwable projectiles to pass through. As the game goes on, players collect more resources to unlock better resources, which in turn allows them to obtain stronger zombies to send to kill the opponent. The gameplay loop focuses on upgrading resources and outlasting the opponent until one player is defeated. But after 5 minutes, the walls drop and both players obtain snipers to kill one another.
Design Goals:
Create an fun yet competitive multiplayer experience that blends past-pace gameplay with RTS mechanics.
Leverage UEFN to deliver rapid prototyping and live iteration across all gameplay systems.
Develop a gameplay loop found in Fortnite that does not use standard weapons, but still easy to pickup.
Key Takeaways
With a 16-hour window and the technical limits of UEFN, there was zero room for non-essential features. Our design process became a constant exercise in creative problem-solving. Instead of just adding content, we had to ask, "What is the most effective way to deliver our core loop within these constraints?" This taught me to embrace limitations as a design tool, using them to rapidly identify and build what truly mattered for the player experience.
